Balogun Repeats Zidane's Story at the World Cup: Scores a Goal and a Red Card

Folarin Balogun played a colorful match in the 2026 World Cup round of 32 against Bosnia-Herzegovina on Wednesday (July 1, 2026) or Thursday morning. The United States striker contributed one of the two goals that led to a 2-0 victory over Bosnia, which secured the United States' place in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup.

However, Folarin Balogun was unable to accompany the United States to the final whistle after receiving a red card for a violent foul on Bosnian defender Tarik Muharemovic in the second half. Television replays during the referee's VAR check showed Balogun stepping on Muharemovic's ankle, though it appeared to be unintentional. He was subsequently shown a red card.

United States national team coach Mauricio Pochettino defended his team. He had seen the television replay and was confident Balogon didn't mean to foul Muharemovic. "It shouldn't have been a red card. When I watched it on TV, there was never any intention to step on an opposing player," Pochettino said, as quoted by Reuters.

Whether intentionally or not, the referee decided to pull a red card from his pocket to send Balogun off the field. The situation was reminiscent of the Zinedine Zidane incident in the 2006 World Cup final.
