The Phoenix Suns traded Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets.
The Phoenix Suns traded veteran star Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets in a major deal involving two young players, a first-round draft pick, and five second-round draft picks, ESPN reported on Monday.
In the deal, the Suns received Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the 10th pick in this year's NBA Draft, and five second-round draft picks from the Rockets. The trade will officially be finalized on July 6.
Durant, who was appearing at the Fanatics Fest event in New York when the news broke, expressed relief over the move. “Crazy, the past few weeks have been crazy, but I’m glad it’s over. I’m looking forward to being part of the Houston Rockets,” Durant said.
Durant's arrival is expected to strengthen the Rockets' position in the race for the Western Conference title. He will join 2025 All-Star Alperen Sengun, rising star Amen Thompson, and veteran player Fred VanVleet in a squad that recorded 52 wins last season under coach Ime Udoka.
Durant, who will turn 37 in September, remains productive with averages of 26.6 points, 6 rebounds, and 4.2 assists in 62 games this season. He also became the first player in NBA history to average at least 25 points, 50% shooting, and 40% three-pointers over three consecutive seasons.
Durant mentioned he had a feeling he would join the Rockets. “They had a great season last year. I like their leadership. I feel I can be a good addition,” he said.
Durant's close relationship with coach Ime Udoka was also a key factor in his move. The two have a history of working together at the Brooklyn Nets and the US national team. Udoka recently signed a long-term contract extension with the Rockets.
The Rockets ranked 27th in jump shot and isolation shooting efficiency last season. Durant's presence, who leads the NBA in isolation shooting efficiency and off-the-dribble shooting, is expected to address that deficiency. He shot 50.9% on off-the-dribble shots, the highest in the league.
Meanwhile, the Phoenix Suns are reported to have begun exploring a trade for Durant last week, with a focus on the Rockets and Miami Heat. While other teams like the Raptors, Cavaliers, Clippers, and Nuggets showed interest, the Rockets are Durant's preferred destination, with the Heat and Spurs listed as alternatives.
