McDonald's and Krispy Kreme End Business Partnership

McDonald's (MCD.N) and doughnut maker Krispy Kreme (DNUT.O) have ended their business partnership. Both companies said they would terminate their partnership in the United States in July.

This is because the two companies had difficulty managing the costs associated with the joint venture.

Under the partnership, announced in March last year, McDonald's had planned to sell Krispy Kreme donuts as part of its breakfast menu at over 14,000 stores in the US.

However, so far, the donuts are only available at 2,400 McDonald's restaurants, according to the company.

"In the end, our efforts to align our costs with unit demand were unsuccessful, making this partnership unsustainable for us," Krispy Kreme CEO Josh Charlesworth said, as reported by Reuters on Thursday (6/26/2025).

As part of the agreement, Krispy Kreme also agreed not to supply its donuts to other fast food restaurants in the US until the end of 2026. The donut chain withdrew its annual forecast in May and said it was reassessing the implementation schedule for the program alongside McDonald's.

Krispy Kreme shares, which have lost around 70% of their value this year, rose slightly in choppy premarket trading.

The donuts are part of McDonald's important breakfast menu, a feature the restaurant chain has been trying to enhance by adding new items, bringing back old favorites, and investing in marketing.

McDonald's said Krispy Kreme is a small and non-material part of its breakfast business, which it calls a core pillar of its business strategy. However, this partnership business has not generated significant profits.
