Los Angeles Riots, Trump Deploys 2,000 National Guard
US President Donald Trump has deployed 2,000 California National Guard troops to Los Angeles following a second day of clashes between hundreds of protesters and federal immigration authorities over alleged arbitrary arrests by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE).
Sporadic confrontations erupted again Saturday in the suburb of Paramount, south of Los Angeles. Officers fired tear gas, explosives and pepper balls, and protesters threw rocks and cement at Border Patrol vehicles. Smoke billowed from small piles of burning trash in the street.
Tensions escalated after a series of sweeps by immigration authorities earlier in the day in L.A.’s fashion district and elsewhere, when the number of immigrant arrests for the week climbed past 100 and a prominent union leader was arrested at a protest and charged with obstructing law enforcement. The White House said in a statement that Trump would deploy the Revolutionary Guard to “address the lawlessness that has been allowed to fester.”
