5.1 magnitude earthquake rocks Iran, tremors felt in Tehran
An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck Iran. The tremors were reportedly felt in the city of Tehran.
"A 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck northern Iran," the U.S. Geological Survey reported, as cited by AFP on Saturday (June 21, 2025).
The event occurred on Friday (June 20) local time. The official news agency IRNA reported no casualties and only "minimal damage."
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers. The epicenter was located about 37 kilometers southwest of the city of Semnan.
State television reported that the earthquake measured 5.5 on the Richter scale and shook the area around the city of Sorkheh in Semnan province.
The tremors were also felt in the capital, Tehran, which is about 150 kilometers from Sorkheh.
The earthquake occurred amid ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel. The two countries have been exchanging missile strikes since June 13.
